Course: So-Called “Conversion Therapy” and Ethical Responsibility – Home Study

Description

“So‑Called ‘Conversion Therapy’ and Ethical Responsibility” is a 1 credit‑hour recorded video home study continuing education training for mental health professionals who work with LGBTQIA+ clients and communities. This training examines how “conversion therapy,” a widely debunked practice, has evolved from overt change efforts into contemporary clinical, coaching, and pastoral practices that still target sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Participants will review the current legal and professional landscape, including recent Supreme Court activity around conversion‑effort bans, and learn how to identify and ethically interrupt modern change‑effort practices in diverse clinical settings. The training emphasizes survivor‑informed, trauma‑responsive care, with a focus on helping providers recognize red flags, navigate complex ethical dilemmas, and advocate for affirming, client‑centered treatment.

Designed for master’s‑ and doctoral‑level clinicians (e.g., LMFTs, CPCs, LCSWs, psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychiatric NPs), as well as advanced trainees and allied professionals in mental health settings, this training includes lecture and examples. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how contemporary change‑effort practices show up in referrals, documentation, and institutional policies, and how to align their work with current ethical standards and community‑based best practices.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this 1‑hour training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe historical and contemporary forms of so‑called “conversion therapy” and their documented harms, including impacts on LGBTQIA+ clients and communities.

  • Summarize key legal, ethical, and professional standards related to conversion‑effort practices, including recent Supreme Court developments and major organizational position statements.

  • Identify modern red flags, coded language, and rebranded approaches (e.g., “exploratory therapy,” “healing unwanted same‑sex attraction”) that may signal conversion‑oriented services in clinical and adjacent settings.

  • Apply affirming, trauma‑informed, and ethically grounded strategies when working with clients impacted by conversion efforts.

Participants will receive 1 NBCC credit hour for full attendance and completion of required documentation.
